Our signature whisky, Redbreast 12, is characterised by the complex flavour and distinctive qualities of Pot Still whiskey. After being triple distilled, it is aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks. These casks are then blended to find the perfect balance between the red fruit, spice and chocolate aromas of the sherry, and the round, pastry-like flavour of the bourbon.
The history of Redbreast can be traced back to the Gilbeys Wines & Spirits Import Company, founded in 1857. Gilbeys was a great success from the start, and within a few years the company had opened branches in Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh.
The first reference to the ‘Redbreast’ brand appeared in August 1912, when Gilbeys sold J.J. Liqueur Whiskey 12 Years Old under the name ‘Redbreast’, which was soon to become one of its most prestigious brands.
The name ‘Redbreast’ itself refers to the bird Robin Redbreast and is attributed to the then Chairman of Gilbey's, a keen ornithologist.
Located in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland, the Midleton distillery is the heart of Irish Distillers. It's also where master distiller Brian Nation does his exceptional work. Redbreast whisky uses a combination of malted and unmalted barley, a characteristic of single pot still whisky, which is still a unique type of whisky in Ireland.
