A TRIBUTE TO THE STILL THAT HOUSES 'THE BEAST'.

Since 1896, all Mortlach whiskies have been distilled 2.81 times. Our spirit passes through six copper stills of different shapes 0.81 times more than Scottish standards require. It's an exact science enhanced by the magic of the "Wee Witchie", the smallest of our stills.

Forged over 120 years ago, we take great care to ensure that it retains its original shape and details. It is in this copper antechamber that the characteristic richness of Mortlach and its reputation as the "BEAST OF DUFFTOWN" are formed.

We have therefore dedicated this 12-year-old Single Malt Scotch to the still where it comes to life. It is aged in European and American oak casks to enhance the particularly rich and robust character that is the stuff of Mortlach legend.

MORTLACH, DUFFTOWN, SPEYSIDE, 1896

Dr Alexander Cowie oversaw the very first distillation, a unique and extremely complex process, using all his scientific know-how.
He was not a distiller by training, having previously practised as a doctor for 5 years in the exotic regions of Hong Kong. After the unexpected death of his elder brother, he returned to take charge of Dufftown's oldest distillery alongside his father George who, before becoming owner of the Mortlach distillery and learning the art of distillation, was a Scottish railway engineer.

George passed on his equipment and know-how to his son Alexander. After his father's death, Alexander doubled the number of stills he had inherited.
There are now three wash stills and three spirit stills, all in gleaming copper and of different shapes and sizes.

The No.1 still is the smallest of them all. It is nicknamed "Wee Witchie".

The alcohol passes through a tangle of copper pipes and six stills of Byzantine configuration. It is cut, recut, mixed, distilled and distilled again. It is refined again and again, more than any other Scotch, until the primary character of the Scottish water and malt is revealed. Dark and earthy, rich and complex.
This spirit will give life to a powerful whisky with a totally unique character, inimitable for centuries and centuries. A whisky known as "BEAST OF DUFFTOWN".
The inspiration and reasons that led Cowie to invent this distillation process will die with him, but future generations of distillers will follow in his footsteps, never altering a single step or a single still. This is known as "THE WAY". The spirit is said to have been "distilled 2.81 times" - a figure as precise, mysterious and elegant as the process that gave life to the wildest of whiskies.

"The Way" is handed down from master to apprentice, generation after generation. Each new distiller scrupulously follows this same process to obtain an exceptional brew every time.

Dr. Alexander Cowie is an AUDACIOUS man who had the AUDACIOUS idea of creating a whisky of unparalleled intensity.
