Born in 1894, Masataka Taketsuru is considered to be the founding father of Japanese whisky. Trained as a chemist, he was hired by the Settsu Shuzo company which, in 1919, entrusted him with the task of learning about whisky production in Scotland. Masataka fell in love with Scotch whisky and met his soul mate there: Rita Cowan. His dreams of becoming a distiller were born in Campbeltown, during his training, and he had already given a lot of thought to the perfect place to set up a production unit in Japan: for him, the island of Hokkaido was a must. But on his return, Shinjiro Torii (his boss at the time) decided that this option was not ideal and he decided to found his group's distillery in Yamazaki. Some time later, Masataka Taketsuru and his wife Rita left for Hokkaido. They founded their first distillery in Yoichi. The legend was born! After the construction of Yoichi, in 1934, on Hokkaido, Taketsuru was able, in 1969, to set up his second distillery near Sendai: Miyagikyo. The Nikka group's entire range is based on production from these two separate sites. Taketsuru still contains whisky from both sites.
