Santiago de Cuba rum is distilled by Cuba Ron in the coastal town of Santiago, in the south of the island of Cuba. The company owes its existence to the nationalisation of the Bacardi and Matusalem distilleries in 1960.
It is said in Cuba that this Santiago de Cuba 12 Year Old was Fidel Castro's favourite rum, which is hardly surprising given that it was his revolution that led to the nationalisation of the distillery.
Santiago 12 Year Old Rum is distilled in a multi-column apparatus before being aged for at least 12 years in oak casks.
Colour
The colour is brown, tending towards red.
Nose
The nose is typically Cuban, with a sweetness mingled with hints of tobacco and smoke. Fruity aromas (grape, banana, coconut) blend harmoniously with caramel scents. The whole is supported by a subtle woody-spicy combination.
Palate
Less sweet when tasted than the impression made on the nose. A bouquet of spices explodes first, then gives way to woody notes reminiscent of Bourbon. After aeration, dried fruit and smoky flavours emerge.
Given this singular aromatic profile, it's easy to understand why Fidel Castro would have liked this rum so much, if legend is to be believed!
